A series of earthenware tiles in an oak, bay and sunflower design, hand-painted and over-glazed in yellow on Dutch blanks. The tiles originate from a fire surround in a house on the Castle Howard Estate in Yorkshire, home of George Howard, Earl of Carlisle who was a friend and patron of Morris.
The name Longden is after the iron-founders Longden of Sheffield. Philip Webb’s account book for 1 January 1870, notes a payment of 10 shillings for ‘Design. Longden, tile’.
