Are you living in Waltham Forest and looking to begin a career as a museum curator? We’d like to hear from you.

We are offering a paid traineeship as part of the newly launched Genesis Pathways Programme. The successful applicant will begin a year-long programme of training with the potential to extend to a second year at the Gallery.

We actively welcome applications from individuals who experience barriers to traditional paths into museum work and from those currently under‑represented within the sector.

Work Experience

William Morris Gallery offers short term work experience placements for young people aged 16-25. The programme aims to give young people an understanding of what it’s like to work in a museum/gallery setting; make them feel more confident in a professional environment; help them to understand work-place expectations; and enable them to gain relevant skills that can be applied in their future careers.

How placements work

We offer up to 8 placements per academic year and a placement is typically 5 consecutive days / 26 hours. Placements are managed by the Learning Team, so there will be an element of working with school groups, but a week-long schedule will also involve working with different departments across the Gallery, including Retail and Marketing.

Selection

Due to a high volume of requests we only offer placements to young people who are either living or studying in Waltham Forest.

If you meet the criteria and would like to be considered for a work experience placement at William Morris Gallery, please email Sarah Vallois sarah.vallois@walthamforest.gov.uk, explaining why you’re interested in a placement at William Morris Gallery and what you hope to gain from the experience.

Extended placements

We also work with universities to support students looking for longer placements as part of their accredited course. We are able to host placements in our learning team, public programme and marketing. We are not currently able to support anyone in the curatorial team. Regretfully these are not currently paid placements.

If you are interested in applying for an extended placement, please email Sarah Vallois sarah.vallois@walthamforest.gov.uk Please explain how the placement fits into your course requirements, what experience you are looking to gain and we will be in touch.
