This design by William Morris is for a small rug. The design features half of the finished rug, which would be symmetrical. In the centre is a small flowerpot or case, from which stylised blooms and tendrils emerge. Morris used variations of this flowerpot design for a number of ‘Hammersmith’ rugs in the first years of their production (1878-1881). These small rugs, or ‘Finger Carpets’ as Morris called them- were made as wall hangings.
