Sharing the William Morris Gallery collection

Loans

The William Morris Gallery is committed to making its collections as accessible as possible to all audiences. This includes a commitment to the loan of items to other public institutions for the purpose of public exhibitions.

Criteria for loan of objects

William Morris Gallery’s policy is to loan objects only to accredited museums, or those institutions, which can otherwise prove that they maintain professional standards. William Morris Gallery must be satisfied that the purpose of the loan fully justifies the temporary alienation of the item(s) from the Gallery’s collection.

The maximum length of time for which an object can be lent is normally three months. Requests to borrow items for longer periods (e.g., in the case of items lent to several institutions and/or overseas institutions) will be considered at the discretion of the Gallery’s curators.

Items may travel to not more than three institutions in the course of an exhibition tour.

Loans will only be made subject to a satisfactory condition assessment of the object by Gallery staff, and subject to the acceptance of the Facilities Report completed by the Borrower.

Initial procedures

William Morris Gallery normally requires a minimum of six months notice, before the proposed start date of the loan.  A formal request should be made in writing, please include the following information:

  1. Title of the exhibition
  2. Exhibition venue(s) and dates
  3. Name, address, e-mail address and telephone number of the exhibition organiser
  4. Name, address, e-mail address and telephone number for the contact at each venue
  5. List of objects requested, quoting William Morris Gallery accession numbers where possible
  6. Reasons for using the museum objects in the exhibition

If there are any proposed changes in the loan details please inform the Gallery immediately.
