Family Day: Useful and Beautiful
WORKSHOPS

Explore the beauty of everyday objects through the art of metal embossing.
Join us for a creative Family Day exploring the beauty of everyday objects through the art of metal embossing.
Inspired by metal objects on display in Earthly Paradise, families will discover how artists and designers have transformed practical items into beautiful works of art. Taking inspiration from Rory Hutton’s Useful & Beautiful print, decorative metalwork from the exhibition, and William Morris’s own candlestick from Red House, participants will explore the relationship between creativity, craftsmanship and everyday life.
Using copper embossing foil, children and their grown-ups will create their own candlestick artwork, embossing the outline of a candlestick before decorating it with colourful designs, patterns and imagery inspired by the Gallery’s collections.
Alongside the workshop, families can also explore our new William Morris Gallery family trail, designed to help children discover objects, stories, and ideas throughout the redisplayed galleries. Visitors can also pick up a family activity booklet for Earthly Paradise, encouraging creative exploration of the exhibition together.
These free drop-in sessions are open to all families with children under 18. The activity is most suitable for children aged 4+ years. All materials will be provided. If sessions become busy, we will run a waiting list throughout the day.
Sessions will take place in the Learning Rooms on the Second Floor, with lift access available. All children must be accompanied by an adult. A breakout space will be available for anyone who needs it. Sensory satchels are also available to borrow. Families will be encouraged to explore both the newly redisplayed permanent collection and Earthly Paradise using our family resources.
