Lace Day Takeover

With London Lace Club & The Lace Guild

SPECIAL EVENTS

Sunday 21 June 2026

This is an opportunity to explore and learn about an endangered craft. Bobbin lacemakers will share their work and techniques throughout the day, offering visitors a chance to watch as fine lace is created from simple threads. Part of the Women in Print final weekend celebrations.

Meet the makers, gain insight into their practice, and discover the artistry behind their beautiful bobbins. Short drop-in talks will introduce the history of lace, bobbins, and contemporary lacemaking.

Archive photographs, lace samples, and videos will also be on display, charting the development of lacemaking communities.

A celebration of craftsmanship and decorative arts, the day aims to demystify the art of lacemaking for all visitors.

London Lace Club was founded by Amelia White and Lauren Watson in 2023. The club is a community-led response to the decline in lacemaking education and lace groups local to London. The craft has always relied on the social exchange of skills, and the club uses this legacy of collective making as its foundation. By bringing people together to learn and share, these gatherings ensure the craft remains a living, accessible practice rather than a lost one. The club meets fortnightly in and around Central London and their sessions build on 15th Century tradition of communal lacemaking.

The Lace Guild is the largest lace organisation in the United Kingdom and has a museum with a large collection of lace and associated artefacts. They also run a world class library. The Guild produces two quarterly magazines and publishes books of lace techniques and patters. They also run courses and workshops throughout the UK and have regular exhibitions at their headquarters in Stourbridge, where there is also a comprehensive library.
