This hand-coloured photograph depicts the Lloyd family, who lived at Water House, now the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow. The publisher Edward Lloyd bought the house after William Morris’s mother left in 1858. Edward is shown with Maria Martins, who was living at Water House at the time of the 1861 census (as Maria Lloyd). The couple married after the death of Edward’s first wife, Isabella, in 1867. The other figures are believed to be two of Edward’s sons.
