William Morris’s cartoon for a stained glass window in Bradford Cathedral, c.1863. According to the Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Minute Book (from 10/12/62 – 23/10/74) now in the collection of the Huntington, California the cartoons for the single figures in Bradford east windows were allotted as follows: “Rossetti: Jacob, Mary Magdalene, Martha at £3 each; Ned: Virgin Mary, David at £3 each; Marshall: St Peter, Moses, Solomon? Anna at £2 each; Morris: Elijah, Mary sister of Martha, Joseph at £2 each; Brown: Abraham, Isaac, Elizabeth, Paul if he will accept them.” Although the minute book assigned Moses to Peter Paul Marshall, it appears to have actually been undertaken by William Morris.
The East window was altered when a new Lady Chapel was added to the Cathedral built from designs by Sir Edward Maufe, RA; following cleaning and restoration the stained glass was re-fitted in the East windows of the new Lady Chapel in 1964, divided into three windows. Other cartoons for these windows in the WMG collection are as follows: St Joseph (A5)St Luke (A10) St Peter (A19) Isaiah (A22) Mary of Bethany (A23).
