Group visits

We welcome groups at the William Morris Gallery but ask that you book in advance. Groups can visit on normal opening days (Wednesday to Sunday), or on Tuesdays by prior appointment if you have booked onto a curatorial tour. Entry to the Gallery for groups is free, as it is for all visitors. Please contact the Gallery using the contact details at the foot of this page to book your group visit.

Curatorial tours

Our curators would be delighted to give your group a private tour of the Gallery. We currently offer two tours:

  • The popular ‘Meet the Man’ tour offers an introduction to William Morris’ life and work through key artworks on display. This is the perfect start for your group's first visit to the Gallery, bringing together Morris’ varied interests in craft, politics and literature, as well as introducing his close collaborators.
  • New for 2016 is ‘Useful and Beautiful’, a guided tour of the most special textiles in the Gallery’s collection. From embroidery to tapestry, carpets, woven and printed designs, this tour includes a visit behind-the-scenes to view further samples from the rich textile collection. It is a real must for anybody with an interest in the design and manufacture of Morris & Co’s famous fabrics, and reveals the story of those who made them.

Tours last 50 minutes and cost £105 per group (Meet the Man) and £180 per group (Useful and Beautiful), for a maximum of 15 people. If you would like to bring more than 15 people we can offer consecutive tours or discuss other possibilities. Curatorial tours of the permanent galleries are currently only available for pre-booked groups. For details of free curatorial tours of the special exhibitions, which are open to everyone, see the events calendar.

To book a curatorial tour of the Gallery please email wmg.bookings@walthamforest.gov.uk.

Waltham Forest welcome

For community groups based in Waltham Forest we offer a special introductory welcome to the Gallery. If you have never been to the Gallery before, our Activities and Events Officer will be happy to show you around. This includes a personal welcome, a brief tour of the building, information about the facilities and programmes on offer and a look at one of our star objects to start you off on your visit to the Gallery.

The Waltham Forest Welcome is free and offered Tuesday to Sunday subject to availability to pre-booked groups only. Tours last for 30 minutes. Please note that these are not curatorial tours of the displays and exhibitions.

Catering for groups

Groups are welcome to make use of the Tea Room during normal opening hours. On Tuesdays, the Tea Room is closed as the Gallery is closed to the public. However, the Tea Room staff may be able to provide catering especially for your group. Please mention this when you book your visit and we will put you in touch with the caterers to discuss your requirements.
