Museums at Night: Mr Smith’s Letterpress Workshop

  • 15 May 2014
  • 18:30 - 22:30
  • Free, just drop in and bring your friends.

Numbers are limited for the printing activity and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Other tickets will be given out to return to the printing workshop on Saturday 17 May.

Mr Smith’s Letterpress Workshop and William Morris Gallery invite you to a special event for Museums at Night.

Typographic artist Mr Smith will be recreating extracts from Art and Socialism, William Morris’s lecture of 1884, in his beautifully crafted, contemporary style. You are invited to join his printing workshop as his apprentice to help complete this creative task. Together we will celebrate Morris's belief in everyone’s right to be creative at work

Check out Mr smith in this short film we made of him hard at work in his workshop

The bar and Tea Room will be open throughout the event, which will also feature:

  • performances from Walthamstow’s Forest Poets
  • talks from Gallery curators on Morris and typography
  • the chance to handle original objects in our library
  • a film screening of 'An Introduction to printing with Mr Smith's Letterpress Workshop'

Plus ... test your mathematical skills with the 'Multiplication for Printers' quiz.

Please come wearing indigo blue workwear if you can, William Morris's favourite colour.

The Gallery got the chance to host Mr Smith’s Letterpress Workshop after winning the public voting stage of Connect10, a competition that teams up museums with contemporary artists to run an event during Museums at Night. If you voted for us, thank you!
