"The workshop really helped to ‘bring alive’ ideas in art, thank you!"  (Art & Design Tutor, Leyton 6th Form College)

English Magic is a politically-charged exhibition reflecting the roots of much of Deller’s work focusing on British society. It offers teachers and students the opportunity to explore ideas about what art is - how can it be used to express and promote debate around politics and social justice.

These two-hour sessions with artist/lecturer Hugh Hamshaw Thomas will introduce the work of both Deller and Morris, considering how art can be used as a tool for political campaigning. Students explore themes such as democracy, social justice and equality and then design and create their own campaign placards to stage a demonstration on the Gallery steps. This session can be adapted for a range of ages from 14+ to undergraduate.

Sessions are free thanks to funding from the British Council. However a cancellation charge will be payable if workshops are cancelled within 14 days of the event. Photographs will be taken to document the event so tutors are asked to ensure students have permissions cleared for images to be taken.
