Family Day: African Wax Fabric

  • 30 May 2015
  • 13:00 - 16:00
  • Free, drop-in event for families of all ages.

On the last Saturday of every month we pack the Gallery full of fun activities for families to make and do together. Each event includes a make and take so you can remember your day.

This month artist Phoebe Swan shows us how to create colourful designs with batik, a traditional method of textile design originating in Indonesia and used today in African wax fabric. Children will have a go at using the tjanting tool to create the resist pattern and then watch the pattern appear as the dye is applied and the wax removed. Children will create their own designs with our family-friendly method using wax crayons and watercolour paint as well as making a funky new pencil case with the African wax fabrics used in Yinka Shonibare’s exhibition, no sewing involved!

This event is part of our African Textiles Season
