This fine upholstered tapestry footstool has been finished with Morriss's Woodpecker design, bun-feet and traditional-style studding.
The Woodpecker tapestry was woven in 1885 and was William Morris's first design for a tapestry at the at the Merton Abbey works. The design was inspired by a tale from the Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses. A sorceress turns King Picus into a woodpecker when he refuses to become her lover. The original tapestry is on display at the Gallery.
