Morris was a powerful campaigner for social justice and his influence is still cited today by leading activists and thinkers. In this session, students examine 19th Century political pamphlets and posters produced by the Socialist League and create protest placards based on a contemporary campaign or issue.

Explore visual storytelling by William Morris and his friends, in works such as George and the Dragon and Beauty and the Beast. Learn how to read stories in artworks and how rich, descriptive language can be evoked. In this session, pupils retell and perform stories to their classmates providing imaginative starting points for further creative writing back in school.

Throughout his life William Morris was always concerned with creating a better world. When he was 50, Morris’ belief in the need for social change became so strong, he became a radical socialist. In this workshop, students explore campaign methods adopted by Morris and compare these to contemporary campaigns. They develop an activity to address a Citizenship issue: how to make their voice heard, make a difference and bring about change.

Groups will be split in half upon arrival. A member of the learning team will take half on a 30-minute gallery tour, whilst the other half spend time sketching in Gallery spaces, accompanied by school staff.

Paid workshops can be booked on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Guided Tours and Self Led visits can be booked on Wednesdays.

We have a lunch space which can be reserved for 30 minutes immediately before or after your booked session time, this facility is included in the cost of the workshop.

For other groups wishing to use the lunchroom for 30-minutes, there is a £30 charge.

Yes please, our facilitators may need to adjust the session. Please provide information on allergies, hearing/visual/mobility impairments, coordination issues, behavioural needs and ESOL. Please be aware that the learning studio is on the second floor which can be accessed by stairs or lift.

Once we have received your booking confirmation form the booking is complete and all admin processes will be actioned. Any changes or cancellations will be charged on a sliding scale:

• Cancellations within one week of the workshop date will incur the full cost of workshop or facilitators’ fee if the session is rescheduled

• Cancellations within two weeks of the workshop date will incur 50% cost of the workshop or facilitators’ fee (whichever is the lowest) or £20 admin fee if the session is rescheduled

• Cancellations within four weeks of the workshop date will incur 25% cost of the workshop or £20 admin fee if the session is rescheduled

Yes, we have space onsite for up to 2 minibuses, but please let us know in advance so we can reserve this for you.  Also, there is a coach parking bay opposite the gallery on Forest Road.

A member of the Learning Team will welcome you and take you up to the Learning Studio. After a brief health and safety introduction your workshop facilitator will begin the session.

It is important that you arrive at the agreed session time. We will do our best to adapt timings if you arrive late, but unfortunately this isn’t always possible.

Our shop is cashless. Members of staff are welcome to make purchases using a credit or debit card on behalf of the students. We are in the process of developing goody bags which will be available to purchase in advance.

Teachers / Group leaders remain responsible for children’s behaviour whilst visiting the Gallery – this includes in the workshops. Our facilitators will direct the learning and focus on delivering an inspiring and engaging workshop. School staff and accompanying adults must appropriately manage the behaviour of the group. Children must not be left unaccompanied at any time, even if one of our Gallery staff or volunteers is present.

We request that maximum group sizes are 30 students + accompanying adults. If you need to bring more than one group, please arrange this in advance with our Learning Team.
